Dear GRITE members, colleagues, and friends,
We hope that you can make the most of the health crisis that affects us all around the world and we sincerely hope that your partners on the ground are not unduly affected. We are just beginning to get used to this new state of globalized individual confinement, but we are already seeing the breakthrough of blind spots, gray areas, and politics which can have several implications both for (our) research. and for different areas of life in society.
We have selected a few press articles that may be of interest to you, which appear at the end of this newsletter. Please share with us any article, news or reflection that you deem worthy of interest for GRITE network. Since the time is also for solidarity, we invite you to share with us also any call to action, letter to sign, etc.
Greetings confined but united,
Karine and Marie-Dominik

Can David Beat Goliath? Strategies to Hold Canada’s Global Mining Sector Accountable GRITE is very pleased to co-host with the Centre for International Policy Studies and the uOttawa-ULyon Joint Research Chair on Urban Anthropocene our next brown bag session with our member, Stephen Brown (political studies), and John Cameron (Dalhousie). Can David Beat Goliath? Strategies to Hold Canada’s Global Mining Sector Accountable The human rights violations and environmental destruction related to mining represent a specifically Canadian contribution to global harm. In this talk, we examine the range and depth of strategies by Canadian civil society organizations (CSOs) working to hold Canadian mining companies accountable for the harm they cause abroad. Based on analysis of quantitative data and preliminary interviews with CSO staff, we seek to understand their overall lack of success to date and identify which strategies that are most likely to be effective in the future.Date: March 31st, 2021 Time: 11:30am-1:00pm Location: Webinar Speakers:Stephen Brown (Political Studies, uOttawa)John Cameron (International Development Studies, Dalhousie University) Moderator: Karine Vanthuyne (Sociological and Anthropological Studies, uOttawa), GRITE director.
